Know how to anchor in the local waters of Oceanside.
Learn the skills and knowledge of securing your vessel to the bottom. Whether it’s for fishing, swimming, a lunch break, or an overnight stop, one of the real pleasures in boating is “hanging on the hook” in some quiet spot. Emergencies such as loss of power, equipment breakdown or failure, or weather hazard may also require that your boat be anchored for a time.

Every skipper needs to understand the fundamentals of gas and diesel engines to perform basic maintenance and diagnose problems underway. Learn about transmissions, propellers, and steering. Get the knowledge you need to keep your boat in tiptop shape.
- Basics of engine layout and operation for the gasoline inboards, outboards, and diesels
- Basic mechanical systems such as drive systems (propellers), steering systems, and engine controls
- Diagnose problems that might be beyond your ability to fix
- How to share information with your mechanic so the right repairs get performed

- Navigation Rules: Boat registration; regulations; required safety equipment; state boating laws;
- Coastal Navigation: Charts and maps; plotting; electronic navigation, anchoring, emergencies; communications afloat.
- Water Sports Safety: Life jackets; emergencies onboard; fire extinguishers; distress signals
- Introduction to Navigation: Digital Charts and GPS navigation.
