America’s Boating Club Oceanside’s Hands-On Training (HOT) program gives you the real-world skills that no classroom can provide — because you spend the day actually driving a boat in Oceanside Harbor and the coastal waters of the San Diego region.

This is a $285.00, one-day, 5-hour program led by certified USPS instructors. You will spend time at the dock learning the fundamentals, then get behind the wheel on the water for supervised practice. Whether you are a new boater building confidence, or an experienced captain sharpening your skills, the HOT program meets you where you are.

Serving boaters from Oceanside, Carlsbad, San Diego, Escondido, and across North San Diego County — no membership required.

What You Will Learn

1
Understanding Your BoatHow boats behave and why
?
  • ?Why boats handle differently from cars — steering from the stern
  • ?What influences the boat: hull shape, trim, thrust, momentum, wind, and current
  • ?Pivot points and how they shift in forward vs. reverse
  • ?Propulsion types: outboard, inboard, I/O, and jet drive
  • ?How steering and thrust work together for each engine type
  • ?Operating in reverse — what changes and why it feels unpredictable
  • ? Watch: PowerPoint Overview
2
Pre-Departure PreparationSafety checks before leaving the dock
?
  • ?Life jacket fitting and inspection for all participants
  • ?Checking weather conditions — forecast, wind speed, wave height limits
  • ?Reviewing the chart and local regulations for the training area
  • ?Boarding the boat safely — handholds, passing gear, stability
  • ?Full systems and equipment checklist — engine, electronics, safety gear
  • ?Engine cut-off lanyard: what it does and how to wear it
  • ? Watch: Know Your Controls
3
Dockside ExercisesHands-on practice at the dock
?
  • ?Getting comfortable with the steering wheel and throttle/gear shift
  • ?Spring line control — holding the boat safely against the dock with power
  • ?Backing the boat — driving in reverse to a target
  • ?45 degree turns — executing precise angled maneuvers at low speed
  • ? Watch: Working with a Spring Line
4
Docking and UndockingArriving and departing with confidence
?
  • ?Approaching the dock — reading wind and current, choosing your angle
  • ?Landing alongside with minimal speed and securing the spring line
  • ?Tying to the dock — spring lines, bow and stern lines, long leads for tides
  • ?Leaving the dock — using a fender pivot to swing the stern out
  • ?Escape routes — what to do if your approach doesn’t work
  • ?Optional: beaching and departing from shore
  • ? Watch: Docking Exercise
5
Open Water SkillsConfident handling at speed
?
  • ?Collision avoidance — using bearings to judge crossing traffic
  • ?Crossing a wake — angle, speed, and how to keep passengers safe
  • ?Going on plane — trim, throttle, and climbing over the bow wave
  • ?Steering on plane — smooth turns, pivot point shift, speed management
  • ?Coming off plane — gradual deceleration, avoiding water over the stern
  • ? Watch: Quick Stop Exercise
6
Advanced ManeuversMooring, holding position, and precision steering
?
  • ?Arriving at and departing from a mooring buoy
  • ?Holding position — using throttle and steering to stay in place
  • ?Steering a range — following a line between two fixed markers
  • ?Adjusting for wind and current while maintaining precision
  • ? Watch: Running a Range
7
Man Overboard RecoveryThe most critical emergency skill
?
  • ?Immediate response — shout, assign a spotter, reduce speed
  • ?Controlled turn back toward the person in the water
  • ?Final approach — upwind side, intermittent throttle, stop alongside
  • ?Recovery — boat hook, throwable device, and getting them aboard safely
  • ?Engine safety — kill the engine before anyone enters the water near the prop
  • ? Watch: Learn to Skipper a Boat
8
Knots and Line HandlingEssential knots every boater needs
?
  • ?Cleat hitch — the go-to knot for securing to a dock cleat
  • ?Bowline — creating a fixed loop that won’t slip or jam
  • ?Sheet bend — joining two lines of different sizes
  • ?Round turn and two half hitches — tying to a ring, post, or rail
  • ?Coiling line — keeping your dock lines neat and ready
  • ?Heaving a line — throwing a line accurately to the dock or another boat

Private Lessons on Your Boat

Want one-on-one instruction aboard your own vessel? We offer private HOT sessions where our certified USPS instructor comes to you. Before we can get on the water together, there are two straightforward requirements — insurance and a signed waiver.

1. Insurance — $1,000,000 Minimum with USPS as Additional Insured

Your boat must be covered by a marine public liability and casualty insurance policy of at least $1,000,000, and United States Power Squadrons – America's Boating Club and its instructors must be named as additional insureds on that policy.

This is simpler — and cheaper — than it sounds. Most marine insurance companies can add a USPS endorsement with a quick phone call to your broker. And if you're currently under $1,000,000 in coverage, bumping up to a million-dollar policy typically costs only a few dollars more per month. The difference in your premium is minimal. The difference in your protection is enormous.

Ask your broker for a certificate of insurance naming USPS as an additional insured, along with a copy of the endorsement. Bring both on the day of training.

2. Signed Waiver — Every Person on the Boat

Every student or passenger aboard during a USPS training session — including the boat owner — must sign the USPS Marine Release, Waiver, and Indemnity Agreement before the session begins. If any participant is a minor, a parent or guardian must also sign.

You can print the form, fill it out, and hand it to your instructor on the day of training — or scan and email it to Shawn ahead of time at 760-468-6212.
